Reading summary: Libya’s Great Man-Made River Project

Summary

This article is by John Watson (18.3.2006) is about the Great Man-Made River project that was built in Libya. Libya is a desert country and the transportation of water was a problem. Libyans had no supplies of clean water and the relative cost of desalination from Europe was expensive. Muammar Al Qadhafi started the project in August 1984 for the pipe production plant and the Great Man Made River project had begun. Libyan economists decided to construct a network of pipelines to transport water from the desert to coastal cities. Libyans living in coastal cities had problems because there weren't any water supplies to areas where they lived.
The Great Man Made project had changed people's lives. In the past years, Libya had to rely on foreign owned companies to help but now Libyans are running the factory.
Libya imports wheat, oats, corn and barley. Libya is now a world leader in hydrological engineering. Libya wants to export its expertise to other African and Middle Eastern countries facing the same problems with their water.

Main Idea

Libya became industrialized after the revolution led by Muammar Al Qadhafi and the construction of the Great Man Made River project also the transport of water to coastal cities changed people's lives.

Opinion

In my opinion I think the Libyan people have faced many problems in the past and the Great Man-Made River project was a great success.
