Research skills1: Summary of the magazine article

Summary

This magazine article is by Ray Thursby, Sports car International magazine. The title of the article is Return to Base and the date published was September 2008.
In this summary I’m going to write about the Corvette C6 Convertible 2008. The specifications of the 2008 Corvette is the vehicle type’s front engine, RWD 2 door roadster steel unibody and a base price of $55,425.The sports car is equipped with a V8 engine and it has a 6 speed automatic transmission. Performance of the Corvette is from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and the top speed is 190 mph, As for the fuel economy it is 15/25.There are various improvements for 2008, the starter button operated by the standard keyless entry device .The engine has a small block V8 6.2 L. This along with high flow cylinder heads, revised camshaft timing and higher-rate fuel injectors, results in a 30 horsepower boost over the existing 400-hp V8. The writer explains that the 6 speed automatic transmission was good but he preferred a manual transmission. Plus for 2008, the Corvette C6 has been modified to speed up shifting also the automatic transmission can be coupled with a 2.73 performance oriented axle ratio. The writer also says the paddle shift option is short of ideal and didn’t find any instances where it seemed to make much of a difference in performance nor did the gear changes feel any faster. The stiffer intermediate shaft and improved machining of its internal components means the steering has better feel and weighting. The writer has no complaints aside from the paddle shifter and the lack of difference between the two magnetic ride settings.

Reading summary: Riches await as Earth's icy north melts

Summary

This article is written by Doug Mellgren,24 March 2007. It is about the riches that await as the Earth's icy north melts in the Arctic. It is an uninhabited place; also it is like a desert with lack of food and water. In addition there few kinds of animals and plants.

Countries are going to fight each other to occupy that place. It is full of oil, fish and diamonds. The U.S Geological survey shows that 25% of the world's oil is in the Arctic and it is undiscovered. Some European countries want to cross the Arctic to abbreviate the time of sailing to the east. In addition, a lot of countries such as Germany and Canada went there to see how the life is and they established some camping to settle and study the area. Also a lot of companies are buying lands for their trades. In addition some old reports show that it will take 100 years for the ice to melt but the new reports say it will take from 10 to 15 years because of global warming.

Although it is a hard place to live, the goods encourage the countries to race each other to be rich.

Main idea

The main idea is talking about the riches and goods in the Arctic. But it is a problem for the bigger countries which are located near the Arctic because they have to search for oil and diamonds to raise their income. In addition still 25% of world oil lies undiscovered there. So, it is the best reason to occupy that place.

My opinion

In my opinion, countries must cooperate together to study the Arctic area and to prepare that place to live there.
